New city parts are being planned as China tries to deal with its ongoing urbanization. In many cases it means that city planners are being confronted with vast areas of newly claimed farmland with little or none contextual elements to consider. Superimpose was confronted with such site when was invited as one of the four firms to tender for the masterplan design of the new Lvting Island Project in Hangzhou.
The government purposely flooded parts of the larger masterplan, converting the project site into an Island surrounded by water. The Island consists of four different sites divided by two roads. A subway line and station are situated under the east-west road making the main focus of this project creating an outstanding TOD development. Superimpose further extended this assignment by the desire to integrate green, human scale and leisure in the development.
In order to achieve this, two main strategies are being utilized. Firstly an ecological ‘Loop Park’ around the four sites is proposed, which activates and utilizes the riverfront and creates a memorable string of program and experiences. The concept of sponge city is integrated into this loop park.
Secondly the four sites are being connected by three pedestrian ‘circulation loops’ at the second floor of the development, which become the primary pedestrian circulation. The loops connect the subway station and bus station on the north-west plot to the heart of each individual site.
